Researchers found that mice that received both vitamin D and resveratrol did well on tests, and a number of markers commonly associated with Alzheimer’s disease had improved. The researchers believe these results are a good indication that the combination of vitamin D and resveratrol could improve amyloidogenic pathways and neuroinflammation.
In the Amazon, traditional healers have used Brazilian peppertree for centuries to treat skin infections. Cassandra Quave, an ethnobotanist at Emory University, decided to research the medicinal properties of the plant to determine how it worked. Quave found that the plant doesn’t kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria, but it does block the gene that allows the bacteria to communicate. Without the ability to work together, the bacteria are impotent, and the body’s immune system can fight them off much more easily.
Researchers found that using acupuncture with conventional therapies produced fewer and less severe headaches as well as decreases in neck and lower back pain. Osteoarthritis patients reported improvements significant enough that they were able to reduce the amount of anti-inflammatory drugs they needed to manage their pain. They also found that acupuncture and counseling could help reduce depression severity for up to 12 months after treatment ended.
