A study recently published in the journal Food Chemistry confirmed the presence of anthocyanins in purple sweet potatoes. The study found that these antioxidants could also improve cellular glutathione concentrations and decrease lipid peroxidation.
Researchers from the Department of Neurology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham found a number of differences in the gut bacteria of Parkinson’s patients and controls. Overall the Parkinson’s patients seemed to have fewer healthy bacteria than the control participants.
Researchers looked at data from over 5,000 people who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2002. They analyzed their cardiovascular health according to smoking status, physical activity, diet, body mass index, blood pressure, total cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose. They then divided the participants into three groups: poor, intermediate, and ideal cardiovascular health. Then they look at their telomeres. The telomeres of people in the poor and intermediate groups were much shorter than the telomeres of people in the ideal group.
