That's why in today's modern world supplements are such an important part of staying healthy. The extra "insurance" they give your body helps ward off the havoc caused by free radicals and inflammation. But does supplementing with concentrated forms of polyphenols and antioxidants really make a difference? Can our bodies actually access the nutrients in the powders and pills we incorporate into our daily routines? A new study published in the journal Nutrients found the answer.
In this study, researchers from Italy tested the bioavailability of the polyphenols in several different supplements made of a total of 36 different fruits and vegetables. They tested the participants' blood before they took the supplements and after 1, 2, 5, and 10 hours.
They found a total of 20 metabolites that they could measure and also noted that different polyphenols and metabolites appeared in the participants' plasma over time, indicating that they were absorbed at varying rates. The researchers concluded that the supplements were indeed delivering powerful polyphenols to the participants' bloodstream, where their body could then utilize them to protect tissues and organs.
