As people age, it becomes harder for their bodies to make an element called nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). Research with mice has found that NAD levels in various tissues drop as mice get older. However, giving NAD directly to mice doesn’t seem to make a difference. They found that if they gave the mice NMN through their drinking water, it would make its way into their bloodstream and their tissues. From there, it would convert into NAD. And it gave the mice increased energy as they aged.
When recalling words, researchers found that some people can complete the task, but struggle to do so. This was predictive of further dementia. They also found a key difference between the brains of those who struggled and those who didn’t. The participants who were able to complete the task easily had higher levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in their brains.
Researchers recently found that those with hypothyroidism tend to have much higher levels of LDL cholesterol than others, mainly due to an increase in cholesterol synthesis.
